The turbulent past of Srebrenica, a small town in the northeastern part of the ancient state of Bosnia, spans a period of 2,000 years and is older than modern Western civilization. The Story of Srebrenica is a literary testament about that history which focuses on the events of the latter part of the 20th century when between 1992 and 1995 a bestial armed aggression was carried out against Bosnia and its indigenous European Muslims-Bosniaks. For three and a half years Srebrenica, which was proclaimed an UN-protected enclave, defended freedom with a superhuman effort, only to have the Serbian aggressor carry out a new aggression in July of 1995, and in a matter of a few days massacre 10,000 men, the elderly, women and children. Including those killed since 1992, more than 15,000 inhabitants of Srebrenica have perished. Most of the victim's remains have yet to be recovered. This is a horrific crime, the worst Europe has seen since WWII. The surviving Bosniak women from Srebrenica are known throughout the world for their peaceful struggle for the truth about Srebrenica. They are persisting in their efforts and they consider this novel their own. They are amazed by its author Isnam Taljic who, as they say,"has depicted everything that has transpired without alienating the reader because of the horror involved, and still managed to pass on the message of suffering". The main story about the defense and the fall of Srebrenica, told by the protagonist of the novel Merdjan Djozic, and a story from a war journal of his grandfather Rahman-beg Djozic, a captured soldier during WWI, are told in such a way so that they wondrously intertwined.
