Alija Izetbegovic
Alija Izetbegovic (1925 – 2003) is best known as the first president of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and leader of the Bosnian Muslim Muslims in their war for survival against the genocide attempted by the Serbs and Croats in 1991-1995. However, he was also a Muslim activist and thinker with a life –long record of service to Islam and Bosnian Muslims.
He joined the Mladi Muslimani (Young Muslims organization) as a teenager during the German occupation of Yugoslavia, and was arrested and jailed in 1946 on charges of anti-communist activities. After his release, he enrolled at the University of Sarajevo, initially in Agronomy and subsequently Law and graduated in 1956. He started working in a hydroelectric company.
